Navigating UnchARTed Territory

Similar to a mountain climber, we all walk around with a back pack everyday.  But, instead of carrying our food, water, and survival gear, our packs are full of our life experiences.  The further we go, the more things we add to the pack.  We keep trying to move forward, sometimes overlooking exhaustion and fatigue and refusing to let ourselves rest, until we reach our breaking point.  Now, we have a decision to make.  Do we keep moving forward or do we stop for a minute to regroup?  

 

Life has a way of throwing things at us that we may not feel ready for, leading to frustration and feeling out of control.  However, if we are able to recognize that life will have its ups and downs and can access the tools we need to overcome the challenges life puts in our way, we can move forward with confidence and grace.  Personal therapy is one way to develop the tools you need to keep moving forward.

 

Check in with yourself.  I encourage you to listen to your body.  Listen to your mind.  Listen to your soul.  What do you need right now?  Remember that you have the choice to set that back pack down.  You can choose to unpack those life experiences and let go of the things that are weighing you down.  You can choose to ask for support and guidance and, maybe, an extra hand to help you sort through your pack.  You can choose to fill your pack with things that will energize you, rather than things that will continue to do you harm.

 

A lot of people come to therapy expecting a quick fix.  The reality is that it takes time and lots of practice for it to feel natural to use the tools you are learning.  Progress in therapy may look something like the mountain line in the UnchARTed Territory logo.  There are going to be ups and downs in the counseling process, just as there are in any of life's journeys.  But, keep the end goal in mind.  You will feel stronger than you did when you first started therapy.  You will be able to put your past in perspective and look forward with hope for what is yet to come.  And, you will walk away with the knowledge and awareness that you are more prepared for whatever uncharted territory you encounter next on your journey.
